August 2011 my lovely wife was watching a popular tv show that was covering GMOs that day. She watched with interest in the story and was more that concerned with the effect these GMOs would have on our then 5 month old son who at the time had horrible colic. She called me on my lunch break , She was on the internet looking up all the information she could find on GMOs. She asked if we could grow fresh food all year around in a small hydroponics system in the basement, I said why not. She continues to do research on the effects of GMOs and the food industry and was horrified at what she was finding. CAFO or Concentrated Animal Feed Organizations where cows are fed corn which causes E coli within their stomach and dead caws that have been ground up. Or milk with blood and puss in it from the cow, who are over milked and bread, and then boiled and treated (pasteurized) to be "fit" for human consumption. Chickens filled with growth hormones that have been shown to cause our daughters to mature early hence start their menstrual cycles when they are 7 or 8.
There is a growing number of people just like us that want good clean healthy food, not just organic vegetables and fruits but meat as well. We want the right to know what is in the food we eat and not have to worry about my wife having an allergic reaction to shellfish while eating a tomato. Eating local is not only healthy but good for community! Only we as American citizens can say enough is enough. And stand behind our farmers and local growers. Only we as American citizens can go to Washington and demand change "for the people by the people" is what we need to get back to.
We have chosen to change the way we look at food and are continuing to make changes to our life style. We are no longer closing our eyes to the poisons that are being put into the food we eat. Easy is not better in our minds we have chosen to take the time to get back to basics as much as we can and hopefully with in a year our goal is to be on a completely self sustaining farm.
